Frequently Asked Questions

When does the school year start and end?
  • The 2025-26 school year begins on July 30, 2025, and ends on May 20, 2026.

What are the start and end times for school?
  • Preschool-3rd Grade: 8:15 AM - 2:45 PM M-Th

  • 4th-11th Grade: 8:20 AM - 2:40 PM M-Th

  • Supplemental Fridays: 

    • Lorna 8:15 AM - 1:15 PM

    • Florentine 8:20 AM - 1:10 PM

  • PVCS operates on a 4-day school week (Monday–Thursday), with optional Supplemental Fridays offered for families who need care or enrichment opportunities. These days are not required and do not count against students if they don’t attend. Students who participate enjoy hands-on, fun learning experiences such as fishing, cooking, dance, and themed clubs.

Is there a breakfast and lunch program? 
  • Yes, PVCS participates in the National School Lunch Program. Breakfast, lunch, and supper (after school) are available daily. Beginning in July 2025, PVCS will apply for the Community Eligibility Provision, allowing the café to serve free meals to all students. Students are also welcome to bring lunch if they choose.

Do elementary students have recess and snack time?
  • Yes, Kindergarten-Grade 3 students have a morning break/breakfast, a recess before/after lunch, and one additional recess. Grades 4-12 have a morning breakfast break and a recess before/after lunch.

Do you offer before-care and after-care? 
  • Yes, before-care opens at 6:30 AM, and aftercare is available until 5:30 PM. 

  • Aftercare is not available on the last day of school.

Does PVCS offer transportation?
  • Yes, PVCS provides free transportation throughout the Quad-Cities area.

What extracurricular activities are available?
  • PVCS offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports such as flag football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, and archery, as well as academic clubs and enrichment programs.

Do you have a school nurse on site? 
  • Yes, we have a school nurse. First aid is available for small cuts or scratches. All medications, prescriptions, and over-the-counter medicines must be provided by parents and kept in the health office.

Do you have a school counselor on site?
  • Yes, PVCS has a school counselor. Parents must sign a consent form before a child can work with our counselor on any school-related needs.

Does PVCS have emergency/lockdown procedures in place?
  • Yes, PVCS has comprehensive emergency plans for a variety of scenarios. All doors and gates are locked during school hours, and drills are conducted frequently to ensure preparedness.

Do you have a school security guard on site? 
  • Yes, PVCS partners with off-duty police officers to provide a school safety officer on campus daily. PVCS also has a school threat management team that is trained, certified, and armed on campus daily. Our campus is also secured with locking gates, cameras, and buzz-in entry systems.

What is the total enrollment at PVCS?
  • As of Fall 2025, projected enrollment for grades K-11 is approximately 500 students.

Does your school require uniforms?
  • No, PVCS does not require uniforms, but there is a dress code outlined in the Student Handbook.

What curriculum does PVCS use?
  • PVCS follows the Arizona State Standards. Current publishers include Hillsdale College, McGraw Hill, HMH, FOSS, Amplify, and CKLA.

What types of breaks do you have during the school year?
  • PVCS has five longer breaks throughout the year:

    • Fall Break: Mid-October

    • Thanksgiving Break: Full week of Thanksgiving

    • Winter Break: Late December

    • Spring Break: Mid-March

    • Summer Break: Late May through late July

What do I need to do to visit the campus during school hours? 
  • For the safety of our students and staff, all guests must sign in, provide and leave a government-issued ID with the front office, and sign out when leaving.

What is the student-to-teacher ratio?
  • PVCS maintains small class sizes to ensure personalized attention, targeting 24 students per teacher in Kindergarten-Grade 3 and 28:1 in Grade 4 and above.

Are your teachers state-certified?

  • Yes, all PVCS teachers hold at minimum a bachelor’s degree, and/or Arizona Teaching Credential, and are highly qualified in their content area.

Is PVCS an alternative school?

  • No, PVCS is not a designated alternative school. It is a free public charter school that accepts all students who choose to attend.

Is PVCS affiliated with the Humboldt Unified School District? 

  • PVCS is a separate entity chartered by the Arizona State Board for Charter Schools and is subject to all statutes, regulations, and requirements mandated to all public charter schools.
